Bonjour from the beach!! (well my balcony overlooking the beach, but more about that later). So I made it to Krabi, and here I sit, ready to update you on yesterday and my first evening by the sea.
When I last blogged on I was waiting for my taxi to the airport, which duly arrived and transported me through the streets of Bangkok towards the airport. And it was still raining. Hard. In fact it was now a full blown tropical storm with the thunder and lightening to boot. Lovely, but the idea did occur to me that my flight may be a little delayed but hey, what can you do, Mother nature is in charge.
It was delayed but only by 30 mins until the storm passed and enough blue sky emerged to make the whole Navy a pair of trousers (the Olds will get that reference). As I stood at the check in desk in the amazing airport concourse, whose roof is made of glass, the rain lashing down was so loud it was like being in a huge conservatory, lighting up every now and then with the lightening and then filled with the booming of the thunder. The flight was with Bangkok Airways and I was slightly dubious as to whether I had actually booked through them or some scam website, but sure enough they existed and very good they were too. It was a 1 hour flight and in that time they managed to give us a hot towel, water, juice, a snack (which was better than some meals I've had) coffee, more juice and then land. All included in the price, as was my luggage. For under £90 return. Look and learn Stelios.
Now, as some of you know I like to be organised. I get my guide book, I plan what I want to see, where to go, what to do. I even plan my free time. That's my thing. But this time, no guide book,, just the hotel. I knew nothing about the area I had booked into, it just looked lovely on the interweb. I know I can find out all I need from when I get there. Unless the place you are staying in is run by the very lovely and chilled out but somewhat strange Thai man from the film 'Hangover'. Google him and watch.
I was met at the airport by him, lets call him Mr Chang as I have no idea of his name and he whisked me away in his car (complete with fluffy gearstick cover) acting camper than a row of tents, and began to tell me all about the trips he could organise me. He really was lovely, even stopping the car for me to get out and take pictures of the stunning view on the way from the airport. But I had been pre warned by Trip Advisor that you could get trips cheaper down the road so I just nodded politely and carried on listening.
The area of Krabi that I am staying in is called Klong Moung Beach, which is about 30 mins from Krabi town itself, and has been described as isolated from mainstream tourist stuff. Lovely, just what I was after thank you! And then Bliss resort came into view. Not so much a resort as a beautiful house with rooms. Stunning simple décor, to die for bathroom ('look at sexy bathroom, hee hee hee' Mr Chang chuckled) and balcony overlooking the beach and sea. Perfect. Now Mr Chang had been a little flaky with his information, 'yeah yeah lots of things to do, shop here somewhere, yeah yeah restaurant's OK too here near, yeah yeah I stay here sometimes, yeah yeah it all good, I take book trips, yeah yeah sometimes I take you, hee hee hee hee' so once I had put my bags down in my fab room, I went for a little walk to explore.
And they were right, it is isolated from the mainstream. But I don't call having a local shop selling all you need, 3 bars and 2 restaurants within 200 yards each way isolated. This area is not built up, there are local houses in between this place and other B&B's, no tourist tat shops (I have to go on a trip for that but I need souvenirs) so that is probably what they mean by isolated. There are other hotels that we passed, just not really in walking distance. But that's fine, I have what I need here. As I found out.
After watching the sun set from my deckchair, I meandered up the beach I found the Jamaican bar, run by a Thai Rastafarian with hammocks and decking and the total holiday vibe, so I sat and enjoyed a couple of Chang (that's the beer, not the bloke from the Hangover). Then I walked back the other way and stumbled on a restaurant, open till 1am, and here I sat, again on the beach, and enjoyed a few more beers and some food.
As you all know, I like to make notes when I'm out so that I can remember everything to pass onto you all. So, I am going to type the notes I made last night, as I wrote them, after a few beers...
Just too remote Trip Advisor say, bloody hell it's at least 100 metres to a bar and a restaurant in either direction, see what they mean. Isolated. And expensive too apparently. So here I sit with hot and sour soup and sticky rice. That made me sweat more than any Bangkok sun, sweet baby Jesus and the orphans. And I got it in my eye, and on my chin. Waitress saw me crying and asked if I was done. Back away there are still prawns in this here fish tank, it ain't over till the fat lady with burning mouth and chin sings. Got any music, I need to sing.....Note to self, my mildly spicy is not their mildly spicy and the cheap tissue paper they give you as a serviette sticks to your face when you blow your nose and wipe the sweat away and causes much embarrassment when you ask for the bill. And onto the bill, yes, soooooooo expensive. 350 baht for a beer and enough soup to feed a small Thai village for a month. Scandal. Then they smiled at me and I had another beer, another pound. No desert though, my housebrick of cash is running low (not), will eat the squashed krispy cream in my hand luggage that I bought at the airport. I may be sick, and I'm singing now, time for home.
I copied that word for word, minus the spelling mistakes. I ate the krispy cream. I wasn't sick. I apologse to all those I may have text, facebooked or tried to Skype. Then I fell asleep and woke up a few hours ago with a mouth like a badgers arse and with the flowers that were kindly left on my bed by Mr Chang, stuck to my face.
I love holidays!!!! So, here I sit, after breakfast on the beach (I will get to that later) and am ready to explore.
Happy days and TTFN xxx
